Ursinus College Community Day

About my Bonner Project:

The goal of this project is to organize a "Community Day" at Ursinus College in the spring on a Saturday, where students engage their community by volunteering for various community partners. Logistically, students will sign up to participate for the event where they will be bused to a volunteer site of their choice for a fun filled day of service. Since this is the first year we will be organizing this event, I think starting out small is a realistic approach by offering three different volunteer sites . As a way to commend students for participating in this event,  I think a cook-out after the event would be a great day to bring everyone together after their day of service.

Responsibilities:

  • Funding transportation
  • Scheduling a date
  • Contacing community partners in need of large amounts of volunteers
  • Create professional logo to advertise event
  • Funding for participant tee-shirts
  • Means of Advertising
  • Funding Food for cook-out

Tasks I'm Working On:

  • Event Itinerary

Tasks I'd Like You to Work On:

  • Tasks listed below under communication
  • Other ideas you have that would make this event more successful

Communication:

April 17

Here are a list of possible locations for the Campus-Wide Community Day proposed for May 1-3.

1National Equality Rally at Independence Hall  (Confirmed)

    Sunday, May 3, 3-4:30 p.m.

    National Constitution Center

    525 Arch Street

    Philadelphia, PA

    http://www.equalityforum.com/2009/event.cfm?id=69

I will be chaperoning this event, along with anyone else that's interested. I  also propose a sign-making meeting the night before, perhaps in Zwingli with GSA?

***Christian, I assume you will be making the bus reservations for the event. I imagine we would need to depart from Ursinus at 2 and depart Philadelphia at 5?

2) Ursinus at Fellowship Farm (Confirmed)

Update:  Amanda said that she talked to the people at Fellowship Farm and that Saturday, May 2nd works out for them.  They also mentioned to Amanda that they can take up to 30 volunteers at the site.

Amanda, what time will students be there? What will they be doing? What time do you think buses will need to depart and return? And I assume you'll be the coordinator for the event the day of?  Amanda mentioned that this event will be taking place from 9am to 2pm.  (If this is wrong though and has changed, please feel free to correct it!)

3) St. Christopher's Children's Hospital (Confirmed)

This event is already set up and I can drive a total of 6 students on May 2nd.  Geo mentioned that this event will be taking place from 12:30 to 4:30 pm.

4) PA CleanWays of Royal Gardens in Morris Park West Philadelphia (Confirmed)

I  called the founder of the organization and set up a park clean-up time from 1-4 p.m. on May 2nd

I will need someone to attend this event to oversee everything, etc.

***Christian here is the address 900 North 68th St. & Lebanon West Philadelphia, PA for the bus information

6) Columbia Cottage Retirement Home (Confirmed)

They put down a group of volunteers from UC to come and help out for a crossword activity night on Fri. 5/1.  All details for this event have finally been confirmed.  The event will start at 6:30 pm and last for an hour.  Volunteers will need to assist residents with reading crossword questions, etc.  When the volunteers arrive, they are supposed to ring the doorbell and let a staff member know that they are here to help out with the crossword puzzle event.  We also still need someone to head this up, so if you are able, please let Geo know.

7) Organic Garden @ Ursinus

Greg can you give us an idea of the logistics for this event (time day) etc.  Greg said that this event will be on Saturday, May 2nd and will begin at 1pm.

Since we have all of our locations I imagine the tee shirt saying " The Bonner Program Presents Ursinus College Community Days"  on the front and the confirmed organizations listed on the back, which are listed above.

Greg and Kristin are going to check into companies that create/make tee-shirts.

As far as food goes...  I  think one picnic on Saturday May 2nd will suffice. As far as exchanging meals goes, we need 125 meals in order for the cook fee to be waived, which is $20 dollars per hour. We also need to keep in mind the times in which students leave for their events on saturday. St. Chris is at 12:30 and the park clean up will probably leave at 12. Amanda, what time will students leave for FF?  Maybe  we can promote the picnic at 11, before all participants leave for their event?

Christian also mentioned that we could use Leadership funding to buy and supplement additional food with what we already have.

Geo has also created a flier for the Community Service Days.  Jess has made copies of this flyer to be distributed and I  was wondering if we could meet before FRIDAY  to disperse them all over campus?  Update:  The fliers are finally ready!  We have 200 colored copies ready to go, whenever people want to meet up and distribute them around campus.

Could someone reserve tables outside of wismer during lunch or dinner for thurs & friday this week and mon-thurs next week?   Yes, Christian is going to reserve more tables for us next Tues. 4/28 and Wed. 4/29 during lunchtime.

Perhaps we could paint a banner for the table sign-ups to attract people?

Lindsay 10/25- Way to wiki Geo! I have an idea for a project for this community day. There is a group that paints over graffiti with murals who normally needs help. I do not know their info, but if you are intrigued by this idea I could do some research for you!

The Wiki is great, Geo! Once everyone has access, we can use it to share ideas for service locations in the Spring!
